Being part of the Triangle Diamond Banyuwangi, Plengkung Beach, also known as G-Land offers you an incredible surfing experience and a scenic beauty. At Plengkung beach you can enjoy the white sand, a panoramic turquoise sea, and the views of greenish forest around the beach. But, the giant waves of the Plengkung beach are the highlight of this destination you should not miss.
The giant waves of Plengkung beach are well-known all around the world, even the name G-land itself is obtained from the surfers. There are various theories concerning the origin of this popular ‘G-Land’ term, some of which claim the name G-Land is coming from the word “great”, “Grajagan”, or it simply represents the curved shoreline in Plengkung beach that represents the letter "G."
What is more, Pengkung beach (also known as G-land) occupies the 2nd position after Hawaii in the best waves category. Unlike Hawaii, which has consistent waves throughout the year, the peak of waves in G-land occurs mostly between April and September. Furthermore, the world's famous surf league WSL (World Surf League) 2022 was also held at G-land.
The beach is located in the cluster of the South Coast of Java and is directly opposite the Indian Ocean, so it's no wonder why the waves are great and challenging. At its greatest moment, which occurs one week after the full moon from April to September, the waves at Plengkung Beach may form a nearly perfect tube-like shape. Isn't it cool?

There are several types of waves at G-land that attract surfers. Starting with the highest wave, Kong, which can reach 8 metres high, there are also money trees, fan palms, speedies, 20/20, and tiger tracks types of wave. The existing waves are caused by the various geological formations of the G-Land shore. It’s such an incredible experience to surf here, isn’t it?
Judging from the wave’s type and height, the Tiger Tracks and 20-20's waves are typically waists to head high, it's clean and enjoyable. The Tigers right in particular is a favourite of those who seek shreddable faces than hollow reef surf. Money Trees and Speedies waves, on the other hand, need more experienced surfers. Given that the waves are shallow breaks, tubing, and ultra vast, you need to be careful because it's common to get an injury from the reef or lip and broken board is also frequent. But this challenging event doesn't stop those surfers to come and experience the giant waves in G-Land.
But don't worry, Plengkung beach is still an enjoyable place for all novice surfers and even for those of you who don't surf. You can travel and see the mighty powerful breaks, enjoy the panoramic pristine coloured beach and its white sand. Located inside the Alas Purwo National Park, you can also try and visit the other destinations near the beach.
Way to get there
Plengkung beach, also known as G-Land, is located within the Alas Purwo National Park region, so anyone who wants to visit the beach can take a private vehicle or car and follow the directions to get to Alas Purwo National Park. If you depart from Banyuwangi city centre, the driving time is expected to be roughly 2 hours.
When you arrive at the Alas Purwo National Park entry, you must purchase an entrance ticket for about 15 thousand rupiahs for local tourists and 150 thousand rupiahs for foreign tourists. After that, proceed to the Pancur guard post. Because the road is slippery and difficult, tourists have to rent a car provided there for 250 thousand rupiahs for a capacity of 6 people. The round trip will take about 1.5 hours.
Anyone visiting from Bali may ride a speed boat from the Kuta Reef in the Kuta region. The journey takes around 3.5 hours. These tours are often conducted by G-Land Beach inns such as G-Land Surf Camp, Joyo's Surf Camp, and many more.
